Our planet is under pressure, however there is hope. A new award originating at the interdisciplinary festival Starmus aims to inspire the public to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will honor to pay tribute to the esteemed scientist and conservationist who died this year. It is designed to celebrate individuals and groups that champion the natural world.

Honoring a Legacy

The inaugural winners will be revealed at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, which will run from October 17th to 22nd next year.

Reports indicate that Jane Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The idea of having this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, originated with Jane,” a statement said. “Her desire was that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely because of the very special bond she shared with us.”

“This medal will recognize enduring projects undertaken to make our world improved for all living beings and ecosystems and offer support for the continuation that work,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

One of the founders of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – will likely encompass various fields.

“It will be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication that we created a decade past,” he explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern on the outlook of the planet, one figure remarked, “To be truthful, it's challenging to feel hopeful. The current political climate in one major nation represents an assault on knowledge. This situation significantly hampers collective action.”

“To be honest, the situation appears particularly bright so we have to really start reflecting, with greater urgency about the consequences of our actions. This concern encompasses not only climate change, but also the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

Following an Example

Therefore, observers believe this is an opportune moment to follow her guiding principles. “I think that when we’re awarding this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to change our relationship with fellow creatures with which we share the planet.”

A pressing concern today was highlighted of misinformation. The theme of the upcoming Starmus festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“It has become apparent that truth has become a subject of discussion when politics is involved. This is a perilous development,” it was said. “Climate research is a science; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

The aspiration is that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “It focuses on inspiring individuals to participate and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we have to look at working all that is possible,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for failure, but you still have to work toward success.”

A descendant involved in environmental protection expressed hope that “given direction and when empowered, humanity are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, citing the work of a foundation which, in addition to its projects, helps the youth become engaged with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall repeatedly reminded us, our daily actions make a difference and it is up to us the kind of difference we choose to create,” it was stated. “It is not too late and this medal will give encouragement and increase understanding about constructive efforts that people are making.”
