New research suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
