The board of trustees of the iconic performing arts venue has decided to change its name the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared online that the board's approval was consensus, attributing it to "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in rescuing the building."
"This is destined to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt reach new levels of prestige and accomplishment," Leavitt continued.
The proposed move is shaping up as highly controversial, especially in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an iconic landmark since its construction and dedication for President John F. Kennedy.
Background of the Venue
Shortly after assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's existing board members and named loyalists in their positions. The reconstituted board subsequently voted to name Trump the chairman.
The president later secured approximately $257 million in appropriated money to finance significant upgrades and other financial needs at the historic venue.
Inception
The concept for a federal performing arts center began in the 1950s. Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the future venue was dedicated to his memory.
