Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
